Hello, I am Diana Galan. I am currently enrolled at California State University, Northridge, earning my Bachelor's Degree in English and Single Subject Teaching Credential. I knew I wanted to become a teacher at a very young age, influenced by my teachers, eager to help students reach their highest potential, and, most importantly, by my parents. My parents migrated to the U.S., not knowing any English, and I witnessed their struggle and, at a young age, had to translate for them. Thus, the motivation to aspire to become an English teacher is to teach those who struggle.
As an aspiring teacher in a vast technological environment, I feel media technology should play a role in classroom lessons. Technology should enhance and support a teacher's lesson by providing interactive platforms, videos, and/or digital texts. Many students are already so involved with technology, so why not take something considered "boring" and make it worth learning and participating in? I believe that having such technology integrated will allow for more student engagement, as well as higher attendance and grades.
From my past experiences, I have had many teachers and professors integrate platforms that allowed my classmates and me to respond in real time, such as Padlet. Personally, I felt this to be a fun way to learn because I was able to see and read all of my classmates' ideas/thoughts rather than those brave enough to respond. This can also be a great outlet for the "shy" students to interact and share their ideas.
Additionally, at the schools I have worked at, many teachers use Google Classroom. I feel that this is an excellent platform for students to engage more with their classes, increase their homework rates, and even prepare them for college, as we college students use Canvas.
Hey Diana!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you that media technology needs to be part of the classroom. It does enhance lesson plans and makes it interesting for students. When students are interested, they are more likely to remember the information that is being taught to them and engage better in the classroom and their classmates. Platforms that help encourage communication between students and the teacher are a great tool, especially in today’s society where they are very hesitant to speak up if they feel like they might be wrong. We live in an age of technology, which means trying to keep it away from students won’t do much for them because they will still go home and be on their devices regardless. The learning place can at least encourage them to use it in positive ways that better their education and understanding. As time change, the learning places have to change with it to ensure progress.
Hello Diana, I agree not all media technology is harmful and can but utilized in the classroom full of students who already have experience in most technology being able to keep up with their way of absorbing information is essential. I also think media literacy is important to teach students how they can safely navigate tech in and outside of class rooms. I also believe Google class room works great this actually prepared me as my current job uses Google Workspace while not many places use Google Apps it still helps students be able to navigate through technology effectively and can be used in the future! Our spaces are already filled with so much technology I think being about to teach students how to safely and effectively put it to use it’s important for their lives in general. I think canvas is great as well for students and I think this is just the beginning and canvas has potential to aid students in more.
