Myths are quite something and truly special to learn about. It was interesting to learn myths from all over the world and to relearn some of them as well. The key takeaways from creating my own myth, as well as the difference between studying them and enhancing my experience, were also quite interesting. It was interesting how, when learning about them, one comes to understand and focus on interpreting the theme, symbol(s), and cultural meaning from an outside perspective. During this time, it allows my own myth to become more tangible. While creating my own myth was really fun and allowed me to be very creative, it also helped me learn and understand the reasoning behind my symbolic perspective. As I also studied myths, this has enhanced my thought process by helping me create my own. This enhanced my thought process by requiring me to present something that people can easily identify with through my symbolic reasoning.
Additionally, the opportunity to create my own myth was quite interesting and fun. I was able to go beyond a surface level of creativity and learned how to present something with deep symbolism without an essay. Creating a myth reinforced the idea that everyone can create their own meaning, rather than just being a consumer of knowledge. In the future, I may plan to teach this, as it gives students an opportunity to create their own and express themselves creatively--since creating something like this mirrors how most make sense of their own experiences.
Hey Diana, I agree! I think studying myths is an easier task for us because we are used to looking at a story and finding the symbolic meaning of things, while creating something forces us to look at our work from an outside perspective. While creating my myth, I struggled to see my myth from an outside perspective because I was too focused on how I viewed the people around me at the time. (My myth was about VSCO girls.) Did you feel like learning about them was easier than teaching or creating a myth? I found that teaching about myths not only helped my understanding but it also gave me a chance to see what teaching others is like, and how we have to find ways to make our presentations engaging! Even though a few students might find studying myths to be boring, giving students a chance to create a myth allows them to understand the overall meaning and importance of knowing about myths while giving them a way to express themselves and seeing how they comprehend the world around them.

ReplyDeleteYou make so many great points when it comes to the contrast between studying myths and creating them. I agree that when it came to studying myths, it is evident how filled they are with symbolism, themes, and rich with history and culture. I think all of these components is what makes them so enthralling. I, too, found the process of studying myths first and then creating one to be very helpful. It gave me a foundational framework of what a myth contains and what I would want to incorporate in my personal myth to engage readers and audiences. I really enjoyed how you emphasized the importance of symbolism in myths because it is true, as this element is what it makes it engaging for readers and allows them to resonate with it. I, too, will also implement what we did in this class in my future classroom. I agree that it does allow them the opportunity to creatively express themselves. No reflecting back to my past school experiences, I never really experimented with creative writing in my classes. I hope to provide this opportunity for my students. I'm sure you will too!
